Wednesday, March 28, 3:21 p.m.

I stand outside the library, my face dappled in yellow sunlight and chilled by the early spring wind. I call Jack’s cell phone. I watch everyone. I’m scared as hell.

Jack picks up on the second ring.

“Katherine?”

“Yeah.”

“Are you okay?” he says.

“I checked my email,” I say.

“Are you safe? When I called a minute ago, they said you left work. Where are you?”

“Where are you?” I counter. “You’re not at some bar, are you?”

“Are you okay?” he sounds like someone is strangling him.

“Yes.”

“God. God…I think I’m having a heart attack.”

“You’re fine. Jack? You’re fine, right? Jack?”

“Yeah…I guess. You saw it?”

“Yes.”

“Was I right?”

“Yes.”

I take a breath, then I say the words I know he has been waiting to hear from me since we met.

“I believe you.”

He lets out a long, ragged exhalation.

“Who’s sending this stuff? Who took our picture?” he says.

“Shouldn’t you go pick Lucy up?”

“They were watching us yesterday,” he says.

“Yeah, and what if they’re watching us now? I gonna go get my daughter right now. You ought to go get yours. Jack? Jack! Are you going to get Lucy?” I might be yelling. I don’t know and I don’t care.

“They’re stalking us just like before…all three of us.”

“Screw this, Jack! There is no ‘all three of us!’ We are not a ‘we!’ I have my own life and my own family and I don’t need this. I am not part of your world, you hear me?”

“Can we get a drink?” he says. “Can we please go get a drink and figure this out?”

“Good bye, Jack.”
